Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, has almost 870,000 inhabitants and is thus the largest Dutch city. Originally a small fishing community on the River Amstel, in the course of the centuries it has developed into an important centre of trade, transport and culture. Above all, it has become a fine city with a characteris­tic atmosphere, faithful to its historic past and yet moving with the times.
